The Muranao, or ”People of the Lake,” inhabit the regions surrounding Lake Lanao in the western highlands of Mindanao in the Southern Philippine Islands. Unlike most Filipinos, who have been inundated by Hispanic tradition, the Moslems of Mindanao and Sulu exhibit more prominent cultural ties with Malaysia and Indonesia, and their gong music might be said to exemplify a development of the same ensemble prototype from which the esteemed gamelans of Sunda, Java, and Bali emanate. Of these Moslem Filipino groups, the Muranao are probably the most geographically protected and culturally intact.
